Christchurch Local AttractionsWhen staying at Thornycroft Bed & Breakfast we can provide you with some guidance on some of the attractions. Christchurch and the Canterbury region is famous for its natural beauty and for the wealth of activities that are available.Since the recent earthquake, Christchurch known as "The Garden City", has changed considerably. The inner CDB is being redesigned and reconstructed. It will still be complimented by tree-lined avenues, the meandering Avon River, and lovely parks and gardens. The once thriving artistic community which supported cafés, restaurants, bars, theatre, art galleries, music and much more is very slowly beginning to re-emerge. Combine this with adjacent hills, mountains and beaches, ski fields an easy drive away, and Christchurch is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world. Among some of Christchurch’s ‘must sees’ are Hagley Park and the Botanical Gardens, the International Antarctic Centre, Orana Park (New Zealand’s largest wildlife reserve), Air Force World and the Christchurch Casino. Christchurch is proud to offer more golf courses within its city limits than any other city in New Zealand. So after a gourmet breakfast at Thornycroft Bed & Breakfast, there is plenty for you to see and do around Christchurch. Canterbury Regional AttractionsWhen heading out of Christchurch you will find many different things to see and do and all are within one or two hours’ drive of Thornycroft Bed and Breakfast. A journey north reveals green rolling hills, winery visits, long empty beaches, and the whale-watching centre of Kaikoura is about 2 hours’ drive away. If you head south you pass through farmland and cross rivers ideal for fishing, whitewater rafting or kayaking. Mt Hutt, the premier ski area close to the city, lies to the south west. A day away from the slopes gives one the opportunity to try jet boating, fishing, horse riding or a round of golf. To the east is Banks Peninsula with its many sheltered bays, beautiful sandy beaches, bush clad valleys, rocky coastline and high, wild places. Activities include boating, tramping, a seal colony safari, winery visits and a visit to the French settlers seaside village of Akaroa. Driving west from Christchurch, beyond the Canterbury Plains, are the Southern Alps, the backbone of the South Island. Being the tallest mountain range in Australasia, the Southern Alps are the gateway to the South Island’s West Coast. This area of Canterbury offers the opportunity to enjoy alpine pursuits such as tramping, hiking, and skiing at any of Canterburys many ski fields.
